My American friend, Linda, has recently moved into a large early 20^th century townhouse in Chicago. They have been furnishing it in period mahogany furniture as well as modern stuff of the right colour – the rooms are large and the three stories need filling. Mind you the basement already has the guest bedroom and bathroom, the gym and home cinema, though some rooms on the floors above seem a little sparse.

We visited last September and this year she visited us. We had our usual browse around our antique shops, and in a large and very jumbly warehouse kind of place (the kind of place where different folks choose to display their goods) she spotted a large mahogany bureau, the size of which our modern houses grew out of long ago. It was the kind of thing than you would comment “I wouldn’t give that house room”, not so much for its Victorian stolidness and lack of beauty (to me that is) but because you had no room in which it would fit. However, Linda fell in love with it and when she heard the bargain price just had to have it. As she was around only for three days it was left with me to arrange shipping. A process that was easier than I had envisaged.

There are a number of container shipping companies to USA offering to ship single furniture items. They offer professional packing services and door to door collection and delivery. The bureau was carefully packed by the shipping company and then I think it shared a pallet or something with other goods.  Even with the cost of shipping Linda felt that her furniture purchase was a bargain.
